4 Signs You Have a Bad Business Partner

Blueprint for Product-Market Fit at SnS Design

A successful business requires you to have faith in your business partner. You must trust one another to make good decisions, challenge bad ones, and collaborate in the middle. How can you establish a great business together if there is no trust? You may have reservations for good reason at times. Pay attentive attention if your gut instinct tells you that something is incorrect. This blog post will go over the flight warning indicators of an untrustworthy business partner.

They have their own agenda

Everyone has their own agenda. That is not a terrible thing; it is just the truth, and it is important to be aware of. You should be aware of someone’s portfolio before doing business with them. What do they have a stake in? What else might this collaboration with you possibly be for?

In some circumstances, this can be a really good thing. People from adjacent companies or alliances in order to further one of their ventures—or vice versa. Great. What you should be concerned about is whether or not this proposed alliance would be ranked second, third, or last on their priority list. Or perhaps you want to establish an empire while they want to build a quiet exit.

They never take responsibility

Everyone makes errors. It’s all part of the process of learning. The key thing is to admit your faults. Many people refuse to admit that they have done anything wrong. They are ready to point the finger at others before acknowledging guilt. They blame the seller and the customer, but what if they blame you? People like these will never feel guilty and will never learn from their mistakes. They are condemned to make the same mistakes over and over again.

They lie

The bottom line is that you should never conduct business with someone who can’t even be honest with himself or herself. These are the ones who strive to hide even the slightest of details—a profit margin, a project error, and so on. People you want to work with are those who are upfront and honest, because that is the quickest and most successful path to success.

If you have a gut feeling that you can’t trust the individual you’re considering working with, you should critically consider the drawbacks as well as the pros. It may appear modest and insignificant at the time, but remember: money is an amplifier. Who is seated in front of you will become amplified as dollar signs march into the door.

They have a bad history

Bad business partners will not be around for long. Did you see how they have a streak of failed attempts? They may explain that it was due to the other partner, a vendor, or an economic issue. Keep in mind that there are always two sides to every story. Several disastrous relationships could be the biggest warning flag of all.

While it is critical to avoid the incorrect business partner, many partnerships may survive a few squabbles. Make an effort to resolve your issues first, and if that fails, it may be time to go on. While walking the delicate line of an unstable business partnership, it is beneficial to have an experienced attorney on your side. An attorney can help you with company planning, agreements, contracts, and other legal issues.
